2013 Member Satisfaction Survey

Phil Laplante, PE, PhD
VP Publications

In the summer of 2013 the Reliability Society (RS) Committee ADCOM decided to conduct a comprehensive survey of society members and other stakeholders to determine how best to serve its members’ needs. The IEEE Strategic Research department worked with the ADCOM to construct a survey instrument, and in the late fall of 2014 the survey was administered. 1,579 people were surveyed, including 1,235 RS members and 344 RS sponsored conference attendees.  The survey, which consisted of 26 questions, had about a 25% response rate.

Nearly half (48%) of respondents indicated that they were satisfied with their membership while 43% were neutral and only 7% were not satisfied. Respondents who indicated satisfaction tended to be more involved in RS activities for example:

  • Attending a chapter meeting,
  • Participating in a RS standards working group or activity,
  • Participating in a RS Technical Committee,
  • Volunteering on an RS board or committee,
  • Accessing RS conference proceedings
  • Using the RS Digital Library, and
  • Visiting the RS website.

Respondents also indicated that Transactions on Reliability was the most important from among a list of 13 reliability focused publications.
The RS ADCOM will be using the results of the survey to focus its outreach and communications efforts. Members can do their part too by partaking of the activities described above.
