IEEE Reliability Society

To help RS increase its visibility and recruit more members in China, a market with significant potential for IEEE and the Society in the 21st century, Professor Eric Wong (Vice President for Technical Activities in 2013) visited Xi’an last October to attend a roundtable discussion, hosted by Professor Yunwei Dong at Northwestern Polytechnic University, to explain the procedure of establishing a local RS Chapter.

There were 15 attendees from different organizations such as Northwestern Polytechnic University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xidian University, Northwest University, Xi'an University of Technology, and a few industry sponsored research institutions. Professor Jianguo Huang, Chair of the IEEE Xi’an Section also attended the meeting to show his support.

The meeting was very successful with a unanimous decision that RS should have a chapter in Xi’an. The preparation since then has shown good progress. To further promote this initiative and provide local organizers with additional encouragement and endorsement, Dr. Jeffrey Voas (Senior Past President of RS) and Professor Eric Wong (Secretary of RS) visited Xi’an again in April 2014. In addition to discussions with Professor Huang, Chair of the IEEE Xi’an Section, Dr. Voas and Professor Wong also exchanged ideas and shared experiences with other RS members in Xi’an on how to better organize their chapter and make their events more attractive to not only academic faculty and students but also industry practitioners and government officials whose work is within the scope of the society. In particular, Professor Wong presented the operation of the Dallas Chapter as an example for their reference.

Dr. Voas also gave a technical seminar (see Figure 1) on “Imagineering an Internet of Anything” discussing how to better understand the core issues of massive scalability, heterogeneity, wireless (security and privacy), geo-location, and modifiable global clock concerns related to individual things. See Figure 1.

Professor Wong delivered a different speech (see Figure 2) to faculty at the School of Software at Northwestern Polytechnic University on some research issues in software testing, such as how to automate software testing and program debugging, as well as how to test software security and reliability to ensure safe and dependable operations of software systems.

This visit would not be possible without the strong support from Professor Yunwei Dong, the chair of the to-be-established RS Xi’an Chapter. Thank you, Professor Dong, for your hospitality and all the hard work and tremendous effort in helping the Reliability Society establish a new chapter.
