IEEE RS Standards Status for 2014

Louis Gullo

The IEEE RS Standards Committee had working group activity for the following 3 standards:

  • IEEE 1633 – Software Reliability
  • IEEE P1856 – Prognostics and Health Management
  • IEEE/IEC P61014 – Reliability Growth

IEEE 1633

The IEEE 1633 Working Group is making good progress under  the leadership of Dr Ann Marie Neufelder, WG Chair, and Dr Lance Fiondella, WG Vice Chair. Ann Marie has assigned writing assignments to members of the working group. The WG is writing the various sections as they are assigned. Ann Marie began to merge and align all writing assignments as of September 15, and produce the initial first draft for internal WG review by January 2015. This draft revision is the first modification to the recommended practice on software reliability since it was initially published in 2008. This new draft is scheduled to be completed by December 2017. The WG leadership submitted a paper for RAMS 2015, which documents plans to alter the 1633 standard. This paper was approved for oral presentation at RAMS.

The IEEE 1633 WG is using Dropbox to manage the draft assignments and merges into one document. With all the changes from the authors, this task has become difficult to manage using Dropbox. The WG Chair and Vice Chair are looking at alternative tools, such as Central Desktop and Manuscript Central.

The IEEE 1633 WG is planning to develop a SW Reliability tool as a companion to the standard. Discussions with IEEE Standards Program Management have been taking place. Other options are also being considered involving NAVAIR’s interest to develop a tool with JPL (original CASRE developer), and Reliasoft.

IEEE P1856

The IEEE P1856 Working Group, under the leadership of Dr Sony Mathews and Mr Arvind Sai Sarathi Vasan, has continued monthly meetings towards completion of the initial draft of the new standard on Prognostics and Health Management (PHM). The working group is making good progress to develop a new draft for standards board approval by December 2016.

IEEE P61014

The IEEE/IEC P61014 Working Group, under the leadership of Mr. Steven Li has been working to collaborate with IEC leadership, align with the IEC 61014 Reliability Growth Standard Project Team and gain access to the IEC documentation relevant to this new standard. Ms Krasich is the ISO/IEC US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) representative for TC-56 (Dependability Standards). IEC just released CD2 for review by IEEE. Mr Li is interfacing with Ms Krasich for development of the joint reliability growth standard between IEEE and IEC. A Project Authorization Request (PAR) revision was submitted to the IEEE Standards Board requesting an extension of the draft completion from December 2014 to December 2016. The working group chair is committed to developing the new draft for IEEE Standards Board approval by December 2016 with cooperation from the IEC Working Group Project Team.
