An Update of the RS Tutorial Certificate Program on Software Reliability

W. Eric Wong
Secretary
IEEE Reliability Society

In the last issue of the RS Newsletter (Vol. 60, No. 3, August 2014), we announced the launch of an RS Tutorial Certificate Program on Software Reliability. This is an initiative funded by the IEEE Future Directions Committee. The objective is to train the U.S. workforce for competence in selected topics that are essential for producing more reliable and trustworthy software in a cost-effective way. Those who attend the required number of tutorials sponsored by RS within two years of their first participation will receive a certificate signed by the President of the Reliability Society for their accomplishment.

The program has already been offered twice since then. The first time at QSIC 2014 (the 14th International Conference on Quality Software) on October 2 and 3 in Dallas, Texas, included:

  • A Plenary Panel on Software Quality Assurance in Practice with panelists from MedAssets, NTT Data, IBM, Parker Aerospace, Medellin Applied Research Concepts, and the University of Texas at Dallas.

  • Two four-hour tutorials on Introduction to Software Reliability and its Application by Professor Kishor Trivedi, Duke University, USA and Dr. Allen Nikora, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA, USA.

There were more than 30 attendees. The PowerPoint slides and videos of the panel discussion and the tutorial presentation have been posted under a password-protected section at http://paris.utdallas.edu/rs-certificate. Refer to Figure 3 for more details.

The program was presented a second time at ISSRE 2014 (the 25th International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering) on November 3 to 6 in Naples, Italy. To receive a certificate, a participant had to attend two of the following three tutorials:

  • More Reliable Software Faster and Cheaper: An Introduction to Software Reliability Engineering
    Laurie Williams and Mladen Vouk
  • ODC - A 10x on Root Cause Analysis
    Ram Chillarege
  • Advanced software reliability and availability models
Kishor Trivedi, Michael Grottke, Javier Alonso, and Allen Nikora

The program will be offered again with an additional sponsorship of the RS Beijing Chapter at the Beihang University in Beijing on December 18, 2014.
