Dallas Chapter Report
This is the seventh consecutive year that Professor Eric Wong (also the Chair of RS Dallas Chapter) has organized a US National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) summer program at the University of Texas at Dallas. This ten-week program was held from May 22 to July 20 with students recruited nationwide. The program topic this year, “Software Safety: Research, Practice and a Path Forward,” allowed students to develop skills that are generally applicable to their future endeavors, including problem solving, research methods, oral and written communication, and critical thinking. These skills will help students to succeed even if they choose a different research concentration or career path. The Reliability Society past president, Dennis Hoffman, met with all the REU students and graduate student mentors on July 24th to give them an introduction to the Society, focusing on why people join and why they stay. This event was part of the student outreach sponsored by the RS Dallas Chapter. The following photographs were taken at the meeting.
During the program, the RS Dallas chapter and the Computer Science Department at UT-Dallas provided a series of training and lectures on software safety and ethics and professional responsibility for CS & SE not only to the REU students but also to all chapter members who were interested in the subjects discussed.
