Arizona Chapter Meeting Report

Dr. Christian Hansen Attends the August 2016 IEEE RS Arizona Chapter Meeting

The IEEE Reliability Society Arizona (IEEE RS AZ) Chapter held its second meeting of the year on August 18, 2016. The meeting was led by Mr. Louis Gullo, IEEE RS AZ Chapter Chair. The meeting was located at the Arizona State University (ASU) campus in Tempe, Arizona. Dr. Rong Pan from ASU hosted the meeting. Two special guest speakers were invited and presented at this meeting. These speakers were Dr. Christian Hansen, IEEE RS President and professor at Eastern Washington University, and Dr. Aditi Chattopadhyay, ASU Adaptive Intelligent Materials and Systems (AIMS) Center. Dr. Hansen presented the mission of the IEEE RS. He also presented his topic on “Data Management in the Age of Big Data and Internet of Things”. Dr. Chattopadhyay presented the mission of the ASU AIMS Center. The topic of her presentation was “Bridging the Gap from Nano to the Structural Level”. She highlighted several revolutionary innovation research projects being worked at the AIMS Center. Ms. Sharon Murray, member of the IEEE RS AZ Chapter also presented. All three speakers were dynamic and explained their technology in a way that was very engaging to the attendees. Everyone who attended walked away with several gold nuggets that they will draw upon in their future work. Mr. Curt Rosemann had intended to present a topic on how a failure recurrence control process is critical to the reliability design process, but was not able to attend. Lou Gullo summarized Curt’s presentation in the first 5 minutes of the meeting, describing the topic and how it relates to the development of a new IEEE standard. Lou requested that anyone interested in working on the new standard should contact Curt to help finalize the Project Authorization Request (PAR) prior to being submitted to the IEEE Standards Board for approval. The next IEEE RS AZ Chapter meeting is tentatively scheduled for mid-December to be located in Sierra Vista, AZ.
