Silicon Valley RS Chapter Meeting

October 2017

The SCV REL Chapter hosted their 7th technical meeting of the year on October 5th, 2017. With past topics ranging from systematic problem solving to the latest reliability status of copper pillar in semiconductor packaging, this month’s topic focused on financial and managerial accounting for reliability.

The guest speaker, Wim Deweerd of Qualcomm Inc, captured the audience in an informative talk on the basic principles behind the financial and managerial accounting process and how they are used to guide decision making when presented with various engineering options. Dr. Deweerd introduced the financial account equation that lies at the basis of US GAAP and financial statements, and provided warranty examples to illustrate these basic principles.

Abstract: A product with poor reliability can have a significant impact on a company’s financial position and its reputation. Developing a product with good reliability can also require substantial financial resources, again impacting a company’s financial statements. Therefore, there frequently is a close collaboration between the finance team and reliability engineering team to budget, review and forecast these costs and process them into accurate and timely budgets and financial statements that are released to internal and external stakeholders. This process requires sharing a common accounting “language” and understanding of the accounting process of costs associated with reliability.
