President's Message

Dear Reliability Society Members,

We are way through 2018, and after just holding our EXCOM and ADCOM meetings in Seattle, I wanted to update you on where the Society currently stands.

2017 was a very good year for a variety of reasons. We had a surplus of over $400K, bringing our reserves to over $1.9M. To my knowledge, this is the highest amount of reserves the Society has ever had. Our periodicals and conferences showed good 2017 surpluses and the investment income was quite substantial.

We are still working on submitting a Phase II proposal for a new Reliability Magazine, hopefully to be published in 2020 if approval is granted by the IEEE Periodicals Committee in the Fall. And we are still heavily involved in PHM, IoT, and Blockchain technical activities.

2018 is going to be a transition year for the Society's volunteer leadership. I will not be the President and Bob Loomis will step down as Treasurer. So expect changes in these positions: President, Jr. Past President, Sr. Past President, Treasurer, VP of Meetings and Conferences, and Chair of the Society Fellows Committee. And the Secretary and VP of Publications positions may also change.

We will soon hold our yearly ADCOM elections, where 6 people will be appointed to a 3-year term for 2019, 2020, and 2021. If you are interested in running, please contact Christian Hansen (c.k.hansen@ieee.org) and he can give you the details on how to submit your credentials to the N&A committee that determines the final slate of candidates.

However, our membership declined again, and the ADCOM and EXCOM is continuing to seek innovative ways to turn this around. 2017 was not a unique year – membership has been slowly decreasing for many years.

So taken as a whole, 2017 was a great year and 2018 is looking to be quite successful as well. I will have more information on 2018 in my next message.

I hope you have a great Summer of 2018!

Jeff

From the Editor

The year is half over and many Society activities have occurred. We have already completed RAMS, IRPS, and PHM for 2018. Our publications are going strong, both with existing and new publications. There are also many activities planned during the rest of the year. See announcements for upcoming events. This issue contains exciting news, announcements, and chapter activities of interest. Please enjoy reading about and participating in society and chapter activity.

Members and organizations have much knowledge and information to share. This sharing strengthens our disciplines, members and the society. Technical bulletins in our field of interest, committee announcements, Chapter activities, conference call for papers, etc. are needed for the newsletter. Inputs for future newsletter issues are due in the following dates for input.

  • Issue #1, inputs due Feb 1
  • Issue #2, inputs due May 1
  • Issue #3, inputs due Aug 1
  • Issue #4, inputs due Nov 1

I look forward to communicating society information in our topics of interest with our membership. The Newsletter is only as good as the inputs provided, so please help bring our members an outstanding Newsletter. As always, feedback and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Get active and enjoy the year,

Lon Chase
