President’s Message

Dear Reliability Society Members,

It has been a great privilege serving as the Society President for the last 2 years. The Society has continued its long-standing reputation of involving itself in high quality conferences and publications, and it will continue to do so.

We have completed our elections for 2019. I’m pleased to announce that Prof. Carole Graas will be our President in 2019. The other incoming 2019 officers are:

  • VP Publications: Steven Li
  • VP Membership: Evelyn Hirt
  • VP Technical Activities: Shiuhpyng Shieh
  • VP Meetings and Conferences: Jason Rupe
  • Treasurer: Alfred Stevens
  • Secretary: TBD
  • Junior Past President: Jeff Voas
  • Senior Past President: Christian Hansen

And the 2021 ADCOM class is: Evelyn Hirt, Carole Graas, Jason Rupe, Bret Michael, Qiang Miao, and Daniel Sniezek. Congratulations to the newly elected 2021 ADCOM class.

I am also pleased to announce that Bill Tonti will receive the Dick Kowalski Lifetime Achievement Award at our banquet in January.

The Society should end 2018 in good financial and technical health. We have been able to stay on budget while continuing to offer timely technical content in areas such as Security and Privacy, PHM, Internet of Things, and Blockchain. However declining membership continues to plague the Society, and the incoming leadership will continue to explore ways to resolve this.

Another challenge that the Society continually faces is deciding “when to say ‘no’.” There are many exciting publication and conference co-sponsoring opportunities, both inside and outside of IEEE, that are presented to us regularly. But we can only cover so many technical areas given limited funds and limited volunteer hours. (Saying ‘yes’ too often has gotten IEEE societies into financial trouble in the past.)

I have just returned from the November Board Series of Meetings, and I have good news: (1) Prof. Pradeep Lall was able to get ‘IEEE Reliability Magazine’ over the finish line with full IEEE TAB approval. Many thanks to Pradeep for his diligence in making this happen. Now we will start to build this new publication. (2) Prof. Christian Hansen was elected in executive session by the Society/Council presidents to serve on the TAB N&A committee for 2 years. We’ve never had anyone on this committee in the past (to my recollection).

I’ll close by thanking the 2018 EXCOM for their very hard work, and particularly, Bob Loomis. He has been our treasurer for many years. Being able to call on a proactive treasurer at any point in the year to get “the numbers” makes the president’s job much easier. Bob did that well.

And I thank all of you for your years of support as President. After having served as the Society President for almost 7 years over the past 15, I think it is time to finally “hang up my hat”, for good.

I wish you a terrific Holiday Season, and Happy New Year,

Jeff

From the Editor

As we bring 2018 to a close and look back at the many Society activities that have occurred, this has been a very busy year. Our publications, conferences, and chapters are going strong. This issue contains exciting news, announcements, and chapter activities of interest. Please enjoy reading about and participating in society and chapter activity.

Members and organizations have much knowledge and information to share. This sharing strengthens our disciplines, members and the society. Technical bulletins in our field of interest, committee announcements, Chapter activities, conference call for papers, etc. are needed for the newsletter. Inputs for future newsletter issues are due in the following dates for input.

  • Issue #1, inputs due Feb 1
  • Issue #2, inputs due May 1
  • Issue #3, inputs due Aug 1
  • Issue #4, inputs due Nov 1

I look forward to communicating society information in our topics of interest with our membership. The Newsletter is only as good as the inputs provided, so please help bring our members an outstanding Newsletter. As always, feedback and suggestions for improvement are welcome.

Have a great holiday and start of the new year,
