Research Experiences for Undergraduates at UT Dallas

W. Eric Wong
Chair, Dallas Chapter
Editor-in-Chief, IEEE Transactions on Reliability

Lon Chase
Vice Chair, Dallas Chapter
Member of Reliability Society AdCom

The Computer Science Department at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) conducted a ten-week summer research program funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) for ten undergraduates selected nation-wide from May 18 to July 26, 2018. The event also had technical support from the Dallas Chapter of the IEEE Reliability Society.

It was the 10th edition since 2009 with Professor Eric Wong being in charge of this program. This year’s focus was on “Software Safety and Reliability,” however, the technology and skills learned by the students have general applicability to research and practice in their future studies.

We provided a close collaboration with our industry partners. In addition to working on assigned research projects at UTD, field trips to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company and Argo Data were arranged to help the students better understand how software safety and reliability is adopted in practice for real-life applications. This also gave students a chance to directly communicate with practitioners to receive a first-hand account of the work environments and lifestyles in the industry.

Below are pictures taken during the program.

Field trip to Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Fort Worth
hosted by Dr. Mike Siok who is also the Chair of the IEEE Fort Worth Session

Lecture by Dr. Dennis Frailey (former Raytheon Company) who is also a
member of the IEEE Computer Society Board of Governors from 2011-2016

We would like to give a special acknowledgment to Dennis Hoffman (Former President of IEEE Reliability Society) who attended most of our REU banquets. Unfortunately, he was not able to join us this year due health problems.

An earlier story about our REU program appeared on the NSF website. A similar version (October 2014) can also be found at the UTD Computer Science Department website.
