President’s Message

Dear Reliability Society Members,

Happy New Year! I hope this message finds each of you well.

As we have already closed out 2017, I wanted to say a few words about 2017 and 2018.

I believe that the RS had a successful year, and I’d like to highlight a few items: This is by no means an exhaustive list.

  1. After many years of discussion, we put together a Reliability Magazine proposal. This Phase I proposal was just approved in February. Now, we need to write a Phase II proposal (that discusses governance, operations, and finances) and get it approved. Once this is completed, we hope to have a first issue out in 2020.

  2. Our 3-year IoT investment has produced a newly approved “IoT Magazine” of which we own 10.9%. The first issue is to come out later this year. This is our first “win” from that investment. I expect more will occur.

  3. We have two new membership initiatives under consideration: (1) bundling memberships with other societies in Division VI, and (2) lifetime memberships (not to be confused with being an IEEE life member). This thinking is “outside of the box” for increasing and retaining members. At a recent meeting with all society presidents of Division VI, there was much enthusiasm and support for this idea. We are currently looking at a reasonable price for a Division VI membership, meaning those that select this option would a regular member of all 7 OUs in Division VI.

  4. Our conference business is doing well. It appears that we beat our conference surplus estimate for 2017.

  5. We have 3 “first-time” new members to ADCOM: Preeti Chauhan, Yunwei Dong, and Jie (Peter) Liu. Three returning ADCOM members are: Phil Laplante, Bob Loomis, and Eric Wong. I do not recall the last time we had 3 “first-time” new members.

  6. I believe we have managed to stay off the FINCOM watch list. We will know the final actual numbers when IEEE HQ closes society books around March or April. I also expect the stock market gains of 2017 to add to our surplus.

  7. We are a co-leader with the Computer Society on a new 3-year blockchain initiative. In 2018, the initiative has $300K. We’ve never done anything on this scale before. Our initiative was the only one approved by the New Initiatives Committee (NIC) for 2018. The first event from this initiative will be a IEEE Global Summit on Blockchain that will occur on September 18-19 at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD.

In closing, I wanted to make this message short, so I’ll stop here. Looking forward to hearing feedback from you and having another successful year!

Best Wishes,

Jeff

From the Editor

The new year is off to a grand and active start. We have already completed RAMS and IRPS for 2018. The PHM and QRS conferences are growing near so don’t miss out. Our publications are going strong, both with existing and new publications. Our chapters have many activities to report. Therefore, this issue contains exciting news, announcements, and chapter activities of interest. Please enjoy reading about and participating in society and chapter activity.

I am excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Ruizhi Gao as the Associate Editor-in-Chief of the RS Newsletter . Dr. Gao has been instrumental in the successful publication of past issues and it is my pleasure to acknowledge his contribution in this appointment.
